Welcome to the blog of the Ideal House.
Join us on a journey of groundbreaking residential energy efficient construction in New Zealand. The project is the product of several years working with the School of Architecture at the University of Auckland. The initial concepts of the house were created by Paola Leardini (Lecturer) in mid-2012, while the final design was completed by S3architects.
The gently-sloping, north-facing, 860m² site is situated in beautiful Beachlands, a thriving coastal community situated in the Pohutukawa Coast region of Auckland. The Ideal House aims to be one of the most energy-efficient homes in New Zealand, while keeping to a “main-stream” budget. Designed for a family of five, it not only aims to be comfortable, healthy and energy conscious, but also to produce a surplus of electricity which will be fed back into the national grid. We have three over-arching goals for the project:
- Passive-House certified
- Positive Energy
- 8/10 Homestar Rating
In addition to this, we hope to create a warm, comfortable, enjoyable family home.
The project’s primary supporter is IDEAL Electrical (Rexel Energy Solutions) who will be the supplier of LED lighting, Photovoltaic (PV) Generation, and electrical supplies. The project is also supported by a wide range of innovative New Zealand companies who are showcasing their progressive products and services in this build.
Key features of the home are: a high level of insulation and air-tightness, low E triple glazed PVC windows, heat exchanged ventilation, recycled materials as practical, water harvesting and conservation as well as design-specific Passive House details.
The Ideal House will be open at the end of the project so interested tradesmen, architects, students, and specifiers can view. Data concerning our power usage and internal versus outdoor temperatures will also be published on a regular, ongoing basis following the completion of the build.
We look forward to you joining us on our journey.
